Sachin Tendulkar will not be the captain of Mumbai Indians Team in the fifth edition of Indian Premiere League (IPL) Season 5. In his place off-spinner Harbhajan Singh will be the new captain of Mumbai Indians team when they will face Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the tournament on 4 April, 2012 at Chennai.

Sachin himself has taken this decision. He talks to the management of the Mumbai Indians Franchise for this which the management accepted. Sachin told them that he want break from the responsibility of captaincy. Sachin captained the Mumbai Indians Team in the first four seasons. His only success was in the 2010 edition, in which team was runner-up. Harbhajan Singh is the obvious choice for the management as he has led the team in the Champions League T20 tournament before and made the team victorious. It was also the first title won by Mumbai Indians Team in any Twenty-20 tournament. Currently Harbhajan is out of the Indian National Team. If Mumbai Indians does well in this IPL season, that will be beneficial for Harbhajan to gain attention from the National Team selectors. Recently Harbhajan led the Punjab Team in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where the team was finalist of the tournament losing to Baroda in the final.
