Vijay Manjrekar is a former Indian Test cricketer who played Test Cricket for India during 1950s and early 1960s. He was the father of cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar who also played International cricket for India. In domestic cricket Vijay Manjrekar had played for many teams. Bengal, Bombay, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh are few of the names. On 10 January, 1962 he reached his best ever test batting ranking of No. 8.

Cricket Career


Vijay Manjrekar started his First Class career playing for Bombay in 1949-50 season. In his first match against Baroda, he made 24 and 20 in a losing cause. In first two season he played only eight matches and made 291 runs with an average of 24.25.
Test Debut and First Test hundred
In 1951, Manjrekar played his first Test match against the touring England side at Eden Gardens, Calcutta. He made 48 runs in India's first innings. In his second test played at Kanpur he made scores of 6 and 20.

Next year when Indian team travelled England, he was in the team. In first test of the series he made a brilliant hundred of 133 in India's first innings. This was his first Test century. Though India lost that match inspite of his great effort. He also made runs in other tour matches.
1952-53
Vijay was unable to repeat his good form in the home series against Pakistan in 1952. He played three tests of the five match series and made only 58 runs. He was then selected in the team for West Indies tour in 1953. He didn't played in the first test and failed in second, third and fourth test with the scores of 25, 32*, 3, 2, 0 and 31. In fifth and final test at Kingston he made 43 runs in India's first innings. In second innings he completed his second test hundred. He put together 237 runs for the second wicket with Pankaj Roy before getting out on 118. He ended up with 254 runs in four tests at an average of 36.22.
1954-1960
He played his next test in 1955 tour of Pakistan. He scored three half centuries in five test series with 269 runs at an average of 44.83. He the scored two centuries against New Zealand side in 1955-56. He made a total of 386 runs in that five test series with an average of 77.20. In third test played at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi he made 177 runs in India's first innings which was also his highest test score at that time. His form dropped after this series and he didn't played any big innings in his next two series against Australia and West Indies.
1960-1972
Vijay Manjrekar's best time in Test cricket came in 1961-62 when England toured India. He scored his highest test score of 189* in the series. His scores in first test were 68 and 84. He made 96 in the second test played at Kanpur. In third test he scored unbeaten 189 in India's first innings at Delhi. In five test series He made 586 runs at an average of 83.71.
