Sorana Mihaela Cirstea who was born on the 8th of January, 1986, is a Chinese tennis player. She won a gold Medal at the 2010 Asian Games. She is known for her extra stamina and plays with both hands. She has even defeated many top 10 and top 5 players including Maria Sharapova, Dinara safina, Martina Hingis etc. Though she has yet to win a WTA singles title.

Early Career of Peng Shuai


Peng was introduced to tennis at the age of eight by her uncle. Her parents supported her whole heartedly in the playing of Tennis. Peng Shuai coach was her Uncle himself was a famous tennis coach in China.

In 2001, at the beginning of June she won her first singles title at Baotou, a International Tennis Federation Tournament (ITF) and in October debuted on a WTA tour. In February 2002, Peng won her third ITF Title at Bombay. It was not until 2003 April that Peng next won a match.

2004 was a good year for her. She won a number of ITF matches and these victories gave her a direct entry into her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon. Her rankings went up as she again won her second and overall eighth ITF title of her career. She ended the year ranking 73, after a meteoric rise.

Accomplished Career of Peng Shuai


In January 2005, Peng reached her first WTA Tour semifinal. But Alicia Molik who was on top form defeated her. The following week, in the Australian Open Peng won her first Grand Slam Singles title match. An ankle injury made her lose several matches after that. In august, she topped her all previous achievements by reaching the first WTA Tour Tier I semifinal upsetting world number 6, 7 and 26. This outstanding performance helped her to reach the highest ranking of 31 of her Career on August 15, 2005 which was also the highest ever achieved by any Chinese player. By September 2005, Peng Shuai current ranking was among the top 5 female tennis players across the whole Asian continent.

The year 2006 began disapprovingly. She could not make any significant win except winning the Fed Cup against Indonesia. 2007 was slightly more successful. She reached the second round of the Australian Open. At the China Open, she succeeded in beating the former World Number one and fifth time Grand slam champion Martina Hingis making a significant achievement.

On January 4, 2008 Peng ranked no. 45 beat No 1 seed Ana Ivanovic. She finally recorded the first win of the year at the Tier 2 Bangalore open before losing to Venus Williams. After the US Open her ranking raised to number 40, her highest since 2007 Wimbledon.

In early 2009, Peng Shuai changed coach. Peng then won the Medibank International Doubles, defeated the 28th seed in the first round of Australian Open losing to the eventual winner Serena Williams. During this 2009, china Open she confronted another World Number 1 Maria Sharapova and defeated her.

In 2010, Peng defeated Sorana cirstea at the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International. The next part of her year wasn't that good though she was unseeded quite a number of times.

In 2011 at the 2011 ASB Classic she reached the semifinals and inspite of playing some beautiful Tennis she lost to world Number 2, Yanina Wickmayer. Her next matches did not deliver much good results. She reached the semifinals of the 2011 AEGON Classic eventually losing it. At Wimbledon, she reached until the fourth round where she met the eventual runner up Maria Sharapova thus losing the match.
