He started playing baseball from a very young age and in only 2001 after graduating from high school; Cano was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent and began playing in the minor league system.

He won the Yankees Minor League Player of the Year Award in 2004 and debuted in the major league in 2005. In the first season itself he won the "This year in Baseball" Rookie of the Year Award. In 2006 he won the Silver Slugger Award and was also selected in the American League All star Team, but could not play due to an injury.

In 2009, Cano ranked in the top ten among players in the American league in hits, extra base hits, total bases, at bats, doubles, batting average, runs scored, and triples. His 2014 hits ranked 3rd for hits during the 2009 season and 1st among all second baseman. He also led second baseman in batting average.
