Joe Stumpfel Career Statistics

Joe started canoeing when he was in his teens with his dad as a father son activity, like a bonding experience. He was his guide, and it was from him that he learnt everything. Eventually he tried surfing waves and holes and got into freestyle, he then moved over to C1 for he didn't want to keep bailing water out of the boat and that is how he got into the place where he is now.

His favourite event that year had been the Preworlds in Australia, winning a bronze medal, hanging out with the Fluid crew and then paddling in New Zealand afterwards. The highlight of the trip besides winning the medal was paddling Falls Creek in New Zealand, it runs very infrequently and he felt himself lucky enough to be there at just the right time to run it, with the right people who knew the lines. It was really a fun run for him.

According to him, his favourite thing had been the anticipation of new runs, new rivers. One never quite knows when the rains are about to come and how one is going to cope up with it and that anticipation is fun.

When asked about his next kayaking trip, he said that he wants to head to the Zambezi River next with the Fluid team in December. It will be his first time to Africa and he is really looking forward to the waves, the culture, the wildlife, the people and he is really looking forward to surfing 12B.
