when 'hockey' was declared India''s national game the country was way ahead of other games in terms of skill ,success and hockey.India were not very good at cricket as they are now there was no one day cricket then and there were teams like west indies , Australia , England and New Zealand who were better than India .India beat England and West indies for the first time in a test series and was later followed by the one day world cup win in 1983. cricket went on to become more and more popular as years progressed.India has won many tournaments since then.
The bane of India's hockey has been that during the days when India flourished ,hockey was a game of skill with lot of wrist work, short passes, deception, played on grass .since a few decades hockey has changed from the above style to fast game with lot of long passes ,speed and agility and played on astro turf with aids this kind of game. This changed scenario did not help India because Indians have never been known for their robust physical stamina and strength. The Europeans who were nowhere started playing better because they were physically very strong. This type of fast game has suited them.Every one loves a winning team and that has been the reason for the game of cricket.Politics in team selection , appointment of team managers, coaches in hockey has also not helped its cause. The sponsors love to put in their money on the game which gives their products lot of attention and publicity .So there is no reason to crib but to perform win a lot of tournaments get back the public adulation ,and the rest will follow .The appointment OF HOCKEY COACH ''Michael Nobbs'' is a step in the right direction .He has already won a tournament for India and there are more to follow. When we start getting results things will start happening for hockey favorably. Let's Hope so!
